Live concerts in Cape Town and Pretoria

ctcc recital.jpg

As a post-grad student at UCT I had the wonderful experience of hearing many renowned international musicians, including a number of inspiring pianists, perform in the Cape Town Concert Series presented at the Baxter Theatre. Imagine my delight that they have now invited me to play a recital in their current series. Super excited to be playing in the magnificent venue and on a wonderful Steinway & Sons piano prepared for the concert by Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos ! Thank you CapeTown Concert Series!

Saturday 29 May at 11h00: an hour-long concert due to current restrictions.

POSTER SM - Piano Recital 1.jpg

One of the most creative, hard working and brilliant versatile pianists I know is fellow Steinway Artist Charl du Plessis. I've been able to organise a few small concerts for Charl in programmes I present in Franschhoek and at the Hilton Festival and we often chat about the perils of being an independent and freelance classical concert entrepreneur. I am honoured that Charl has now invited me to play in a new festival of concerts he is curating at the Atterbury Theatre, Pretoria. It is another fantastic and new Steinway & Sons piano I look forward to playing on! I will also be working with a number of young pianists and discussing activities around freelance music work and my livestream programme over the past year at a masterclass the next day.

Saturday 3 April 2021

We have now passed a full year, 52 weeks, of lockdown and presented, without fail, two livestream concerts every week!

For the momentous occasion, and also making International Piano Day, I presented a incredible challenging project that I started working on 34 years ago. I have had the ambition of completing this project in performance for the last 25 years. And I finally did it! You can see my livestream that includes the 12 Chopin Etudes Op. 10 here.

With a year having passed (and the novelty having worn off!) I urge you to please keep supporting our huge effort to bring music to you, and to a wider audience. I am totally dependant on your donations.

If you are viewing these livestreams please consider donating the equivalent of a ticket purchase (R100) every time you view a new livestream even though it is freely available. Suggested via Yoco or Quicket

I am reluctant to gate or restrict these streams as I am aware of many who are isolated and dependant on having access to them without the financial resources to support me. Gating also creates complications regarding payments, access management, licensing and additional platform fees, all of which seem counterproductive under the present circumstances.

Despite the fact that public gatherings are possible, though limited, many of the venues in which I regularly promote my live concerts are simply not open to the public and those that are allow only limited numbers due to social distancing restrictions. Venues at Ambers Valley, in Kloof, Ballito and Durban are simply not available to hosts events. As an independent musician who presents concerts on their own risk of door sales, including costs and without sponsorships or funding, it is currently impossible to pursue a viable series of public performances.

In addition I personally feel it is irresponsible to encourage public gatherings as many of those attending my events are in fact most vulnerable during this pandemic.

Please continue to support our online activities, especially if you are viewing them!

We are currently looking at establishing a members area for that will offer content created specifically for subscribers. A questionnaire will be sent shortly to establish a way forward.

A reminder: my back catalogue of albums is now uploaded to all major streaming platforms including AppleMusic and Spotify. It is worth subscribing to either to access the enormous amount of music available online.

Best wishes and stay well,
Christopher Duigan

Publicity matters and Val Adamson

In our final ‘Love the Arts’ feature, we catch up with the utterly magnificent Christopher Duigan -pianist . We have so enjoyed adventuring safely out and being fabulously creative again, that we are re-grouping, and taking a moment to come up with out next series.

Chris has performed in major venues worldwide, which he was very excited about. “Traditionally I work with many wonderful musicians on an ongoing basis and I miss those collaborations, on and off the stage, immensely. I would say the most memorable experiences overall was in Barcelona, where I visit often. With my close friend David Salleras (saxophone) we were soloists with the orchestra in the magnificent Palau de la Música Catalana playing Yoshimatsu’s Cyberbird Concerto. It is a superb and magnificent venue, of great symbolic importance to the community, and it was was a great privilege to be invited to convey music so powerful, dynamic and fresh - it really stretched us all.”

“I can attest that once on stage you ain’t thinking how attractive or prestigious the venue is. The focus is entirely in the moment! But ANYWHERE with a superb piano and attentive audience, who applaud and smile approvingly between items, is great! The peril of the travelling pianist is that one has to deal with strange, often poor-quality pianos and uncertain acoustics, lighting and environment, and make the best of it. One of the most attractive bonuses about performing in my home studio is that I’m very comfortable with the set-up, the fantastic piano and only need to take a few steps to be ‘onstage’! And I get to share something of my own personal world with the audience too. I think Lil’ Lucy - The Long-Haired Dachshund who appears regularly is stealing the limelight! I also worry sometime that I may never want to venture out again.

What do you love about performing?

I am inspired by the possibility to share the music that has touched me deeply, and that others may experience some of the same. My current livestream project, now nearing #100 since 28 March, offers chance to extend those interactions and reach new audiences too.

When did you last perform live?

Apart from the two livestreams a week, which offer their own unique thrill and audience relation, I did four live concerts during October and November when restrictions were relaxed.

What’s your wish for in 2021?

I ‘wish' to summons the strength to persevere with the programme of twice-weekly livestreams (which I am enjoying, but it is relentless) and to find a balance with the rest of my life. It still feels like we are all on ‘pause' and many essential things have fallen by the wayside in the past 12 months.

DECEMBER 2020

CHRISTOPHER DUIGAN: CALM IN THE CHAOS

PIANO CONCERTS ADAPTING TO CHANGE

One of the country’s most prolific and accomplished concert pianists, Christopher Duigan, has performed two live streamed free concerts every week throughout lockdown.

Duigan, and his Music Revival initiative, are synonymous with accessible live classical music concerts performed throughout South Africa, with home-town Pietermaritzburg as its fulcrum. For the past 30 something years, Duigan performed on average 100 performances a year – solo, with associates and with musical ensembles.

Together with virtually the whole global arts community, his ability to perform ground to a halt when live performance opportunities ceased the moment hard lockdown was declared.

In order not to lose momentum, Duigan opted to explore live music concerts streamed from his beautiful Maritzburg home. The concerts have become more technologically sophisticated and more creatively interesting with the passing of the months, and Duigan, and his plethora of appreciative loyal fans around the country, have become comfortable with the twice-weekly musical offerings.

Duigan is quite possibly the only concert pianist in the world, and certainly the only pianist in South Africa, to be doing this.

“This started off as a temporary project, an interim measure to allow me to perform over hard lockdown, but it is becoming a permanent and important part of my output, and I intend to continue with this, in addition to live concerts which are beginning to open up,” he says.

“My live concerts have appealed particularly to dedicated music lovers, but interestingly the online concerts are also providing a service akin to informal music therapy – an hour of company and calm midst all the uncertainty. It is surprising how many of the comments are appreciative of this. Its not about the music necessarily, but what the music represents. The predictability and structure of music is soothing and reassuring.

“I read with interest about the musicians who have performed during times of war and crisis and am beginning to understand better about the restorative and healing role of music.  I am inspired by Myra Hess who arranged 20000 regular lunch time concerts over six and a half years during the Second World War – performing midst the bombing. She personified the war motto of Keep Calm and Carry On. Her commitment and bravery were astonishing.

“And of course, the concerts can be watched from anywhere in the world, so I am not bound by geography, which means friends of friends are beginning to join us from all over the place. And that they are regular and free – so the predictability allows people to schedule and plan. Viewers can comment and give feedback on FB, so I can respond during the concert which personalises the concert experience. It is such a fascinating process!”

Duigan plays carefully structured repertoires of familiar music, interspersed with some original and improv pieces. The tone is informal and cosy – music interspersed by conversation, with Chris talking about the pieces being performed… and occasionally apologising for the intrusion of his dachshunds who wonder “on stage”!

Pre-lockdown Christopher Duigan was one of South Africa's busiest concert artists. His performances ranged from those of the core classical repertoire, both as soloist with orchestra and in recital to music well beyond the classical repertoire. His strong sense of community was shown in his active promotion of regular Music Revival concerts across KZN and other parts of the country. These concerts have not only developed new audiences in various communities but also provided performance platform for many young and aspiring soloists. Duigan's work as an entrepreneurial musician has attracted international attention for his innovative and ground-breaking approach and his activities have been said to be truly representative of a 21st century classical musician.

The challenge is of course earning an income through the online medium. Duigan is clear that he wants to continue to offer the concerts for free – and invites audiences to make a donation if they are able, but the financial implications of his concert series is difficult, especially as there are costs involved in creating the concerts.

“I hope to find a way to make the numbers work as I intend to continue. In fact, if feels as though I am just getting started!”

  • Catch Christopher Duigan live in Concert on Saturdays and in Piano Hours on Wednesdays at 6pm. South African audiences receive better feed on YouTube, but concerts can be accessed through the Music Revival website and FB.
